Teeth whitening is a popular cosmetic dentistry procedure that provides striking results quickly and easily. Dr. Ross uses the latest and most advanced whitening techniques to give you a bright, enduring smile right away.
How Does Whitening Work?
Minerals penetrate the enamel of our teeth as we age and cause the teeth to gradually darken. Whitening is a safe, effective way to deliver quick results for noticeable change in the shade of your smile.
Dr. Ross utilizes a variety of options to whiten teeth, but the most common method involves the application of a bleaching gel directly to the teeth. The gel features an active ingredient (usually hydrogen or carbamide peroxide) that breaks down and forces oxygen into the enamel and dentin of the tooth structure. These ingredients break up stains and whiten teeth without injuring the structure of the tooth.
Some of the factors that affect tooth whiteness include:
It is natural for some staining and discoloration to occur through exposure to foods, beverages and other elements as you age.
Consistent exposure to tobacco products (cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, etc.) will stain teeth. Tobacco stains can be minimized and even practically eliminated through professional dental whitening. Continued use of tobacco products after the whitening process will negatively influence the longevity of the whitening.
Food and Beverages
Consistent exposure to certain foods (colas, red wine, tea and coffee) will also stain teeth. These stains can be minimized and even practically eliminated through professional dental whitening.
Some medication can lead to tooth stains and/or tooth darkening. These stains are often some of the most difficult tooth stains to remove, but whitening can help.
How Long Do I Have to Wait to See Results?
The time required for the bleaching process will vary depending on the method utilized and type of stains being removed. Most in-office procedures will take from one to three hours and many take-home whitening procedures will yield initial results in as little as 3-4 days.
What are my whitening options?
Dr. Ross offers two types of whitening: in-office whitening and take-home whitening kits. Both options deliver terrific results. The primary differences between the two techniques involve both the strength of the whitening gel and the duration of exposure to teeth. Some techniques work better than others for specific types of stains. When you decide to whiten your teeth, Dr. Ross will be happy to explain which method, or combination of methods, will work best for you.
Take-home whitening kits are both affordable and effective in delivering superb whitening results. Most trays are worn once a day for ten to fourteen days or until the desired whiteness is achieved.
In-office procedures (often called laser bleaching or power bleaching) are safe and effective methods to whiten teeth as quickly as possible. Most in-office whitening procedures are completed in between 1-3 hours including preparation time. Many patients prefer in-office bleaching because of the nearly instant results.
Is Whitening Safe?
Yes. All of Dr. Ross’ whitening products have been approved by The American Dental Association and multiple clinical trials and studies have found them to be both safe and effective. Very few patients will suffer side effects from the whitening procedures, but in some cases sensitivity to hot and cold foods is a possibility (this typically lasts for less than 48 hours).
